T3: Firewall 101
Firewalls seem like “old news” and are not very exciting. Or are they? While firewalls are common, they might not be as stagnate and boring as you might think. Today’s firewalls perform many key security and networking functions such as traffic control and NAT. In addition, many new functions are being added to edge firewalls including antivirus, URL filtering, and other advanced features. Firewalls are in fact evolving and exciting components of every business class network.
A common mistake is installing a firewall and forgetting about it. Like any key network security solution, a firewall should be monitored and updated on a regular basis. But what should you look for in the logs? How do you know when to update your firewall software? If it isn’t broke, why fix it? We will explore these and other important questions.
Our focus will be the technical aspects of firewalls in general as well as new developments in firewall technologies. Proper firewall maintenance and security best practices will also be discussed.
